ILLUSTRATORS & ILLUSTRATION
• We’ll cover illustration ranging from children’s books like James Gurney’s Dinotopia and Beatrix Potter to concept art for Lord of the Rings and Star Wars.
• I’ll discuss everything needed to faithfully illustrate the text: understanding characters, setting, time, culture, and background.
• We’ll read the stories so students can more accurately portray the events they’re illustrating.
• We’ll explore styles from the flat, textured look of the Snowy Day classic to the loose realism of N.C. Wyeth, and try out Disney’s background art techniques.
• In December we’ll look at different illustrated versions of Dickens’ A Christmas Carol and students will create their own.
• As we study each artist, we’ll focus on key concepts like composition, texture, eye flow, perspective, creating maquettes, using models, designing vehicles and gadgets, and inventing a brand-new culture.
• Throughout the year students will also draw from life, with special attention to drawing people.
