Our theme this year is illustrators and illustration.
• We'll cover illustration ranging from children's books like James Gurney's Dinotopia and Beatrix Potter to concept art for LOTR and Star Wars.
I'll discuss everything needed to faithfully illustrate the text: experience, understanding the characters, setting and time, culture and background.
We'll read the stories or portions of the books we cover to help students more accurately portray the events they'll be illustrating.We'll look at various illustration styles from the flat and textured "Snowy Day" classic to the loose realism of NC Wyeth. They'll study and try out the background art of Disney's animated movies.In December, we'll look at illustrations for different versions of Dicken's A Christmas Carol and they'll illustrate their own.As we study each artist, we'll focus on an important concept like composition, texture, eye flow, perspective, creating maquettes, using models, designing vehicles and gadgets and creating a brand new culture.Throughout the year they'll also receive instruction and practice drawing from life as well as special focus on drawing people. Younger classes will have a less rigorous set of projects more focused on learning and fun with some drawing and painting techniques while older students will focus more on art technique and style. Both age groups will enjoy the same lessons and information on artists and illustrations.Students will be given resources to check out online, a notebook to keep the several handouts they'll receive each week so they can look back at pictures or information. And when class is done, they'll have a portfolio of beautiful work showing their journey through this year-long illustration class.
